Safari Lodge or Camp?

How to choose where you sleep · 8 min read

It’s one of the first questions we get from travellers planning a safari: lodge or camp? Both give you unforgettable nights in the wild — they just do it in different ways.

Lodges: comfort and space

Lodges are the choice when comfort matters. Solid walls, generous rooms, a swimming pool with a view over the plains, air-conditioning on hot afternoons, often a spa or a proper wine list. They tend to be larger and beautifully finished, which makes them wonderful for families who want space and reliability, for multi-generational trips, or anyone who likes a little polish at the end of a dusty day.

Tented camps: closer to the wild

Camps trade a few comforts for something more elemental: canvas walls, the sounds of the bush at night, lantern light, dinners under an enormous sky. Don’t picture roughing it — our favourite camps are genuinely luxurious, with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms and superb food. What they add is intimacy: with only thin canvas between you and the night, you hear the whoop of a hyena, the saw of a leopard, the deep contact rumble of elephants passing in the dark. It is safari at its most alive.

The classic safari tent has barely changed in a century — the same East African design of canvas, mesh and a shady veranda used in the days of Hemingway and Roosevelt. What’s changed is what’s inside: four-poster beds, hot showers, and often a private plunge pool.

Mobile camps: following the herds

There’s a third option worth knowing about: the mobile camp. These lightweight, seasonal camps pack up and move with the Great Migration, so you wake exactly where the action is — sometimes within earshot of a river crossing. They leave almost no footprint on the land, host only a handful of guests, and offer perhaps the most exclusive, front-row way to experience the wild.

Location is (almost) everything

Here’s a truth that surprises first-timers: where you stay often matters more than how plush it is. A camp set deep inside a reserve puts you on the wildlife at first light, long before the day-trippers arrive through the gate. A camp on a private conservancy unlocks things the main parks forbid — off-road driving right up to a sighting, night drives, and walking safaris. A lodge just outside the boundary might be grander, but you’ll spend precious golden hours simply driving in. When we plan a trip, location and access are the first things we weigh — not the thread count.

At many camps you’ll be walked to your tent after dark by an armed guard or a Maasai askari — not for show, but because wildlife roams freely through camp at night. Waking to find elephants grazing quietly between the tents is entirely normal.

What’s usually included

One of the quiet joys of safari is how all-inclusive it is. At most camps and lodges your rate covers accommodation, every meal, drinks, and your daily game activities — often laundry too. What typically sits outside the rate: premium champagnes and fine wines, spa treatments, a hot-air balloon flight, park fees at some properties, and staff gratuities. Knowing the difference helps you budget with confidence, and it’s something we’ll always make crystal clear before you travel.

Why not both?

The best answer to “lodge or camp?” is really “what’s this trip for?” A honeymoon leans toward a small, romantic camp with a private plunge pool; a family wants space, a pool and interconnecting tents; a photographer values hides, a private vehicle and flexible timings; a first-timer often prefers the reassurance of a comfortable lodge. Tell us who’s travelling and why, and we’ll match every night to the mood.

Many of the best trips actually combine styles — a couple of nights in a lodge to settle in, then a move to a camp deeper in the reserve for the real immersion. The landscape changes, the pace changes, and the contrast makes both feel richer. Not sure which suits your family or your honeymoon? That’s exactly what we love helping with.
